Clothes
The style of clothing worn in India is very different across the country, but is mostly made of cotton, because it is light which makes it great for India's hot weather. Most Indian people wear sandals.
Until they become teenagers, many children in India wear the same type of clothing we are used to seeing in Canada. Once they become older, they usually wear more traditional Indian style clothing.
Women in India wear a dress called a sari, which is made of a tight blouse and a long skirt, which is covered by a long cloth (5-8 meters long). The cloth is wrapped around the waist, then draped over the shoulder.
Women also wear a costume called a punjabi. This outfit is made up of long baggy pants that are narrow at the ankle, a dress to the knees and a scarf. Most Indian women wear a red spot on their forehead. This is called a tiki or a bindi mark. It means that they are married.

Men in india often wear dhotis, a piece of white cotton (5 meters long). The cotton material is wrapped around the waist, with one or both ends being tucked into the waistband to make it stay up, since it does not have buttons, zippers or snaps. White shirts and baggy pants, that look like pajamas, are also worn by men. (Our word, pajama comes from 2 Hindi words: pa, meaning leg, and jama, meaning garment.)
Many men also wear turbans, which consist of long pieces of cloth woven around their heads.
