Food
Foods of India are well known for being spicy. Throughout India, many spices are used generously in food.
The types of meat Indians eat depends on their religion--non-vegetarian Hindus don't eat beef, while Muslims stay away from pork, and many Buddhists are vegetarians. In the plains regions of India, recipes often include chicken and sheep meat.
There are almost a thousand kinds of rice in India. Maybe that's why most meals in India include rice. If rice is not included, then some kind of a flat bread is eaten. Sometimes the bread is stuffed with vegetables. During holidays, Indians honor their ancestors by preparing traditional food and drink. For Diwali, a five-day celebration taking place each fall, Indians typically eat dishes that center around meat, spices and nuts, as well as small sugary treats known as barfi. Diwali recipes also call for traditional ingredients of paneer (white cheese), chickpea flour, rose water and almonds. During the springtime celebration of Holi, Indians customarily enjoy halwa, sweets made with rice flour, butter and sugar, accompanied by a yogurt-based beverage called bhang. |
Spices and Herbs
Spices are used in every dish that Indians eat. Some Indian dishes can be fiery hot, using peppers, garlic, turmeric, cumin, ginger and curry leaves. Indian chefs also use a lot of cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamom in both food and drink recipes. Drinks
Many Indians start their day with a cup of chai tea. More refreshing drinks include lemonade, coconut milk and lassi, a yogurt-based beverage blended with spices. Forks and knives are not used for eating in most Indian homes. Instead they eat using their hands, either scooping up the food or using a piece of bread as a scoop.
